Jaguar S-Type 2.7 V6 SE

The Jaguar S-Type is a step back to the classic styling of the 1960s model and to some this may look slightly dated, but to those that know and love the brand this is the real deal. This styling is classic Jaguar with curves rather than the slender super models often hastily designed for today’s fashion market –it’s all personal preference, of course, but this model has been designed with Jaguar enthusiasts in mind.

It is true that the S-Type will probably appeal more to the older, executive end of the market but it’s easily a match for the BMW 5-Series, the supposed benchmark in this class.

The model tested, the excellent 2.7 V6 diesel engine is quiet, powerful and a joy to drive. It’s almost relaxing to drive and after a long journey passengers and driver feel relaxed and comfortable. The interior is classy, with the front seats as comfortable as anything else in the market.

Two adults can be easily seated in the back with adequate leg room, but the amount of luggage space, at 400 litres (under normal conditions), is acceptable rather than generous or exceptional.

On the road the S-Type could teach some of its rivals a thing-or-two about handling, taking corners with ease and poise. Cruising on the motorway is comfortable and enjoyable and, crucially, the car demands respect from other motorists.

Fuel consumption in the diesel model is an impressive and economical 36 mpg, again a favourable comparison against its competitors. The S-Type is giving Jaguar a much needed boost with competitive pricing and experienced divers enjoying lower insurance rates.

One drawback with the car is the slightly restricted visability caused by the large pillars on either side of the windscreen creating a substantial blind spot at tricky corners.

That aside despite rumblings in the motor press that the instruments look dated, I prefer to think of them as classic and they are very easy to operate and understand. The in-car entertainment system and satellite navigation system is also very easy to navigate, saving valuable time at the start of a journey that all too often begins with a half-hour mission to programme the journey.

With the future of Jaguar still undecided it is models like the S-Type that will help secure the future of this motoring icon because by appealing to the aficionados who helped to build the brand the company should be on solid ground.

Verdict

Handles well, and good value compared to its rivals in its class. It’s got style and will appeal to those that love the brand.
