The recently launched revamped Lexus IS range is competing in one of the toughest segments in the motor world, the compact executive class, and I was keen to find out if the new model could cut it amongst the BMWs and Mercedes of this world.

The exterior styling has been radically restyled from the outgoing model and you would be hard pushed to find a more stylish and sophisticated model than Lexus’ latest addition.

The sleek styling and bold front end make this a car a head turner and I am sure will attract a strong following over the coming months.

After being impressed with the exterior styling I wondered if they had paid as much attention to the interior. Although not as impressive as the exterior it is still finished to a high standard and the trim level is more than in keeping with its illustrious rivals.

The model I had from Lexus UK was the IS250 and, being a petrol head and a bit averse to diesels, I was glad I chose this option, the straight six unit delivers power when needed through the whole range. Since writing this review, I have driven the 220 diesel model and found this to be powerful and economical also.

On the road the IS is a driver’s dream with a level of refinement not matched by any other car in this sector. Positive reaction and plenty of grip when needed back up the V6 performance, whilst on smooth roads you could be forgiven for thinking your wheels weren’t actually in contact with the tarmac, it is that quiet and smooth. In addition to this, the standard level of equipment in the model embarrasses the entry level specs of the German giants in the sector.

The new Lexus IS equates to a very attractive proposition and one that I would, and have, recommended to the family man and business user alike.
