The new Audi A4 hits the showrooms early in 2008 and needs to make a big impact in the compact executive market. Competing with the big selling BMW 3 series and the recently launched new Mercedes C-Class, the A4 is in illustrious company. These three German giants have dominated this sector amongst the British company car brigade for what seems an eternity and the hierarchy at Audi have high hopes for their new A4 even it does face such stiff competition. There is also the challenge of improving on the outgoing models already glowing reputation and sales figures. They have set about trying to achieve this by introducing a range of new engines, increasing passenger legroom by extending the wheelbase and introducing lots of exciting new technology and gadgets. The range of engines include a 1.8 petrol turbo that providing you get the revs right between gear changes will perform superbly well for any driver style. It is expected that the 2.0 turbo diesel will be the big seller in the fleet markets and it is not difficult to see why with a return of 47mpg (combined) against the 34mpg (combined) the petrol 1.8 returns, a lower emission figure (150g/km against 197g/ klm) also supports this theory. Although the new A4 has benefited from a whole host of refinements the major change has come in the form of a longer wheelbase and a smoother profile on the bodywork., although the change is not dramatic it is instantly recognisable and ensures that the new A4 will be very desirable to the majority of drivers with its smooth good looks. The ride and handling is as you would expect from Audi, firm but not too harsh suspension excellent and accurate steering response. One optional extra is the Audi Drive Select which changes the throttle response, varies the power steering and alters the characteristics of the suspension at the touch of a button ,although at £1700 extra this may be a bit rich for most fleet buyers pockets. Inside the cabin the A4 oozes build quality and the cabin noise is reduced to a whisper with the excellent sound deadening qualities. The increased leg room means that even the tallest of passengers have ample room to travel in comfort. Luggage space is large and roomy and on first impressions appears larger than most of its rivals.
Other additional options available are Xenon headlight, lane change warning and a flashing warning when cars enter your blind spot. The new A4 carries on the fine tradition of its predecessor but adds a touch more refinement and style, with the new technology on board and its increased cabin space there could well be some worried German competitors. |
