The facelifted 2006 model Forester is the latest SUV to arrive from the Subaru stable. It has been given a makeover in the form of new front wings, bonnet, bumper, headlights and grille, to give it a more robust, stronger look than previous models.
The performance, interior and suspension have also all been upgraded. It still wouldn’t win a beauty contest but it is a definite improvement. ![]()
The rear could benefit from a little more legroom, especially for the six foot tall brigade, but one thing that I have noted with every Subaru that I have driven is the extreme comfort that is given to the driver by the seat design and upholstery, and the Forester continues with this excellent tradition.
The cargo area is substantial (especially with the rear seat backed up). The tailgate has a large opening for ease of loading (also helped by the Forester’s low centre of gravity) and there are numerous storage spaces within the cabin.
On the road the XTE model provided an unexpected surprise in the performance produced from the 2.5 litre turbocharged engine, although there is a slight turbo lag this model punches its way through all the ranges with impressive pick up and pace.
The handling and ride comfort is as assured as any of its rivals in the SUV class with only moderate body lean, once again aided by the improved suspension and low profile of the vehicle. ![]()
Overall I have been quietly impressed with the model and with a respectable return in the fuel tank I feel there is definitely a marketplace for the Forester especially with prices starting at just under £17,000 (rising to £25,000 for the top spec 2.5XTEn auto).
Anybody wishing an economical, competent, spacious, comfortable SUV with some class leading performance wouldn’t go far wrong with the Forester. |
