Land Rover Freelander 2

The long awaited “new from the ground up” Land Rover Freelander 2 becomes available this summer, replacing the original vehicle which trailblazed the way for a whole host of compact premium four wheel drives when it was introduced nine years ago.

Land Rover’s fourth all-new vehicle in just four years, Freelander 2 features two new engines: a 3.2-litre straight-six petrol and a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel.

The 230 horsepower petrol engine provides a top speed of 124 mph and a zero to 60 mph acceleration of 8.4 seconds. Combined fuel economy figure is 25.2 mpg, this being helped withy the provision of a new six-speed automatic transmission offering manual sequential gear changes when required. There is also a driver-selectable sport mode, for livelier performance.

The 158 hp PS diesel unit delivers a peak torque of 400 Newtonmetres with more than 200 from 1,000 to 4,500 revs. Combined average fuel consumption here is 37.7. A catalysed particulate filter is optional for even cleaner performance.

Two transmissions are offered: a new sixspeed manual gearbox and the six-speed auto used on the petrol engine. A diesel auto will become available next spring 2007.

Freelander 2 is 50 mm longer than its predecessor and offers more generous head, shoulder and legroom in both the front and rear. Large glass areas emphasise the spacious feel and complement the elevated ‘command driving’ position.

Stadium seating, where rear passengers sit slightly higher than front occupants, for a clearer view of the world outside, is a great idea especially for younger passengers whose view of the outside world may prevent them from asking that perennial question.

Boot space is 38 per cent greater than that of the outgoing Freelander : with the rear seats up the stowage volume is 755 litres compared with the previous 546. Original Freelander styling cues, such as the clamshell bonnet, stepped roof and the basic form, have been retained but the overall look is more contemporary.

The body is a five-door monocoque structure while the suspension is fully independent and uses the most modern stability control systems. Land Rover’s unique Terrain Respons is standard on all but the entry-level model to make off-roading easier. Other interesting technologies include a new full-time intelligent 4x4 system for superior traction and better on-road fuel economy, and the patented Gradient Release Control, which improves driver confidence and control when releasing the brakes on steep and slippery slopes. Freelander 2 is built at the Halewood plant in Liverpool.
