Tees Valley to get £62m bus upgrade
Tees Valley is to benefit from a £62m upgrade to help improve its local bus network, Transport Minister Sadiq Khan announced today.

The scheme, which has received initial government approval, aims to make bus journeys quicker and increase reliability by removing some of the major causes of delays.

The funding - £40m of which is coming from the Department for Transport - will improve services on a number of the major bus routes through Darlington, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar and Hartlepool.

The scheme will focus on;
•The introduction of bus lanes
•Realignment of road junctions to benefit buses
•New parking bays to reduce parking on roads
•Changes to traffic signals giving priority to buses

Passenger facilities will also be improved on bus routes in the area including new bus shelters, increased use of CCTV and real time information screens giving expected arrival times.
In addition the local authorities will be continuing to work with the bus operators to secure a range of improvements including new vehicles, improved frequencies on some routes and better information for passengers.

Transport Minister Sadiq Khan said:
“This is excellent news for the Tees Valley. These facilities will make a real difference to passengers. New bus shelters, increased use of CCTV and information screens are just some examples of the improvements that will help improve the service thousands of local people receive.
“The scheme is also an excellent example of effective partnership between councils and local bus operators demonstrating what can be achieved when government and the industry work together.
“Public transport is the life blood of any region and I am confident that this investment will provide tangible benefits for many years to come.”
