January car production figures show 101,190 cars were produced in the UK last month, up 64.8% on January 2009.
Commercial vehicle production in January 2010 also rose - going up 9.6% compared with a year ago, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said. Nikki Rooke of the SMMT said the statistics were clearly good news for the industry, but warned that the sharp rise had to be viewed in the context of last year's crisis. "It's important to remember that the January figures compare a month when last year many plants were in an extended shutdown," she told Sky News.
Rooke added that the Government's scrappage scheme, which is due to come to an end next month, had prompted a knock-on effect in the car production figures. |
